In one way or another, this horror subgenre (or trope ), depending on how one sees it, resonates with audiences; people are afraid that they will be “possessed” by something, be it … Suffocated by its fussy script and uptight characters, this musty adaptation is all the more annoying since it's been packaged and sold back to us by Hollywood. The 150-year-old love story really comes as no surprise, but it is well played, especially by Jennifer Ehle as Cristobel, the female poet. Plus, it's a really ugly movie to look at: bland, horrible use of steadycam and travel shots, toneless soundtrack and list can go on indefinently. However, not only does Bailey's behavior belie these stereotypes, but it is rare that English scholars will bandy about such labels. I'm still trying to figure out what the heck the title has to do with anything that went on with this film; but that being said, the co-mingled stories are intriguing, well filmed and very well acted.
